NEBRASKA STATE LEGISLATIVE ELECTIONS
The State of Nebraska is divided into forty-nine legislative districts with one state legislator serving each district. Once elected, State Legislators are limited to two consecutive 4-year terms; terming-out after 8 years in office.
Elections are held every two years by rotating the odd and even numbered districts. In 2024, all of the odd number districts were up for election. While official results have not yet been released by the Nebraska Secretary of State, it appears as though the next legislature will consist of 16 left-leaning legislators and 33 right-leaning legislators. Leaving us 1 legislator shy of being able to filibuster bad and/or harmful legislation.

Voter ID
Unfortunately, on June 1, 2023, Governor Pillen signed LB 514 into law establishing voter ID requirements for Nebraska elections.
This means voters will need to show a state-approved photo ID when voting at the polls. A state-approved photo ID will also be required when voting early in-person. When voting early by mail, voters will be required to provide their state-approved ID information on the ballot request form.
The new law also allows for some coverage of costs for state-approved IDs for voting as well as the cost of one copy of a birth certificate for Nebraska residents.
This Nebraska Examiner article written by Aaron Sanderford gives a basic overview on how this new law will work.
The Secretary of State’s Office is tasked with developing an educational campaign to help people better understand the new Voter ID law and will be updating their website with more information as they make it available. We encourage you to learn as much as possible about this new law so that you can help others navigate it in order to help reduce it’s negative impact as much as possible. You can find information from the secretary of state as it comes in by visiting sos.nebraska.gov/elections/voter-id.
