The 109th Nebraska Legislature, 1st Session gaveled in on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

  • Despite the 2nd House showing up by the hundreds to protect body autonomy for women and trans folks, the 108th Nebraska Legislature further restricted abortion access and limited trans care for youth by amending LB626 (the abortion ban) into LB574 (the anti-trans bill). This bill bans abortion in Nebraska at 12-weeks gestation (that’s 12-weeks after your last missed period).

    Abortion advocacy groups campaigned to restore abortion access by constitutionalizing it into the state of Nebraska. Anti-choice advocacy groups funded and promoted by Senator Ricketts also campaigned to have a ban on abortion placed in the constitution. Unfortunately, we saw lower voter turnout this year and the anti-choice ballot initiative won at the polls. State legislators will be legislating the initiative this upcoming session.

    Abortion access is an essential part of reproductive care and gender equality that must be protected. Abortion bans kill women and girls.

    Contact your state legislator and tell them to protect abortion access and bodily autonomy in Nebraska.

  • Anti-LGBTQIA legislation has spread like wildfire throughout our country, particularly legislation targeting transgender folks. Nebraska is no exception. During the first session of the 108th legislature we witnessed a standoff over anti-trans legislation presented by Sen. Kauth (LD 31) that restricts gender-affirming care for transgender Nebraskans under 19.

    Unfortunately, despite major efforts by progressive Senators like Machaela Cavanaugh (LD 6) and Megan Hunt (LD 8), Senator Kathleen Kauth’s LB574 passed with a 12-week abortion ban attached.

    The Study Group continues to support legislation that protects trans rights.
